Shanghai: Decadence with Chinese Characteristics at Head On, Sydney, May 2020

Added on by Dave Tacon.

It's been almost ten years since I've been to Sydney, but I got the good news that the two projects I submitted to Head On photography festival (Shanghai: Decadence with Chinese Characteristics and Yangtze) were both accepted. The first got into the Featured Program and the other in the Associated Program.

I didn’t know which project got into which section straight away and I did hope that my series of panoramas from the Yangtze would be the featured exhibition since I’ve invested more time and effort and also it hasn’t been exhibited before.

I would have been happy if either series was selected, to show at Head On, but unfortunately I’ve had to pick just one show due to costs and timing. In the end going with Shanghai: Decadence with Chinese Characteristics was an easy choice since the Featured Program opens the festival, has more prominent exhibitions and is publicised by a PR agency. The Associated Program happens in the second week and photographers have to find (and of course pay) for their own galleries.

Shanghai: Decadence with Chinese Characteristics is a series on Shanghai’s luxury nightclubs. Somehow it came out decadent, but a bit melancholy.

It’s a shame that the arts so underfunded in Australia. Head On runs on the smell of an oily rag and quite a lot of the festival is funded by the photographers themselves. Hopefully, I’ll get another opportunity to show the Yangtze series though..

Regardless, I’m looking forward to attending the opening of Head On next year in May. I’m still to find out where my show will be exhibited. I’ll update when I know more.
